Wood Named MPSF Gymnast of the Week

Lincoln ? Nebraska senior Derric Wood was honored as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week following his remarkable performance against Iowa last Sunday.  Wood earned the distinction over Oklahoma’s Chris Brooks, Stanford’s Dylan Carney and Cal’s Tyler Block.

After spending the last two seasons overcoming both illness and injury, Wood has returned for his senior year full of determination.  The parallel bars and high bar have proven to be Wood’s bread and butter as he has set career-high marks of 8.90 and 9.45, respectively in each event and has earned a total of three event titles between the two.  Additionally, Wood’s scores of 8.90 and 9.45 lead the Huskers as team-high marks for those events.

Wood earned both of his career-high scores and parallel bars and high bar titles against the Hawkeyes last weekend, propelling him into the national parallel bars ranks at No. 14 and earning him accolades from the MPSF.

Wood is the first Husker to earn MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors this season.  The recognition is the second of his career, with the first coming during his freshman season in 2003.
