Lawrence, Kan. - Sophomore center Aleks Maric scored 12 points and added eight rebounds in Nebraska's 96-54 loss at Kansas on Saturday. The setback - NU's first Big 12 road loss this season - dropped the Huskers' record to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Freshman guard Jamel White came off the bench to add 10 points for Nebraska. Brandon Rush and Jeff Hawkins led five Jayhawks in double-figures with 17 points each.
Nebraska ran into a hot-shooting Jayhawk squad focused on snapping a two-game losing streak. KU (11-6, 2-2) shot a blistering 72.4 percent (21-of-29) in the first half, the highest shooting percentage of a half a Big 12 game in KU history. The Jayhawks finished the game 37-of-62 (59.7 percent) from the field while becoming just the second team to score 80 or more points against the Huskers this season and second straight.
NU remained close early, before a 16-0 KU run turned a 20-15 lead into a commanding 21-point advantage in just over three minutes. After Joe McCray's 3-pointer pulled the Huskers within five, Jeff Hawkins and Russell Robinson broke the game open for the Jayhawks scoring eight points apiece in the spurt with Hawkins starting and ending the run with a 3-pointer. KU hit 7-of-10 from long range in the opening frame and finished the game hitting 11-of-18 3-point attempts.
The Huskers cut the deficit to 16 late in the first half, matching the Jayhawks over the final six minutes but trailed 51-30 at the break. KU continued its torrid shooting early in the second half and used a 16-3 run while holding Nebraska without a field goal over the first 6:24 of the second period to push the lead to 30. Maric's basket with 13:36 remaining was the Huskers' first field goal of the second period and the Huskers did not pick up their second field goal until the 8:01 mark when White's jumper made it 78-39.
Nebraska returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 25 when the Huskers travel to Boulder, Colo., for an 8 p.m. (CST) tip with the Colorado Buffaloes at the Coors Events Center.
