Colorado Springs, Colo. ? Senior Derric Wood and junior Jason Wassung claimed individual event titles on the parallel bars and pommel horse, respectively, to lead four Nebraska men’s gymnasts to top-three finishes in five individual events Saturday afternoon at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Wood posted an 8.35 on the parallel bars to tie Oklahoma’s Joseph Weaver for first place. The event title was the first for Wood since his sophomore season. Wassung scored an 8.85 to earn top honors on the pommel horse for NU's other individual crown.
“I’ve never hit a pommel horse routine in event finals before so this was really nice to finally stick,” Wassung said. “I think as a team we did really well. We need to fix a couple of events, but for this being the first meet of the season, I am very happy with how we performed.”
Sophomore Stephen Tetrault claimed a pair of high finishes, earning second place on the vault with a score of 9.25 and placing third on the pommel horse with an 8.65. Senior Tony Burtle rounded out the Huskers’ individual honors by placing second on the floor exercise with a score of 9.00.
The Huskers finished Friday’s team standings in second place behind defending national champion Oklahoma. Nebraska returns to action next Saturday, Jan. 21, when the Huskers travel to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Open.
