Mitsubishi Awarded Contract for HuskerVision Screens at Memorial Stadium

The University of Nebraska has announced that Mitsubishi Electric has been awarded the contract to install three new Diamond Vision? LED video display screens at Memorial Stadium. The new instant replay screen in North Stadium will be the largest screen in any college stadium in the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>United States, measuring 33’ 7 3/16” high by 117’ 7 1/8’ wide. The two new screens on the south end of the stadium will be approximately 18’ high by 25’ wide, slightly larger than the two original HuskerVision screens that measured 23’ high by 17’ wide, and have been in place since 1994.

The project will be completed at a cost of $4.537 million, nearly $500,000 under the initial $5 million budget for the project.

Dave Belding, Regional Sales Manager of Mitsubishi Electric, said the company is excited about the opportunity to continue its partnership with the University of Nebraska.

“The University of Nebraska was the first to introduce video replay screens to college football back in 1994,” Belding said. “Mitsubishi was part of the team that brought the original HuskerVision screens to Memorial Stadium and is delighted to continue the long-term relationship with the university.”

All three of the new Mitsubishi screens utilize high brightness LED technology, and the north video screen will contain 3,670,016 LEDs. Mitsubishi uses a unique signal process that utilizes a quad dot pattern system to provide very high picture resolution. The system will accept all graphic and broadcast signals, including HDTV.

HuskerVision will be capable of running video on the entire active viewing area of the North Stadium screen, and will also have the ability to segment the screen in a variety of ways to show live action, statistics, graphics and advertising. While the new screen will contain scoring and game time information, conventional scoreboards will also be in place at field level in the southwest and northeast corners of the stadium. New game time and 25-second clocks will be installed on the fa?ade of each end zone.

Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson said the new Mitsubishi screens will further enhance Nebraska’s game-day atmosphere.

“I can recall the buzz that was created among our fans when we added the first HuskerVision screens at Memorial Stadium in 1994,” Pederson said. “We think the excitement of game day reach new levels when fans see the new Mitsubishi screens for the first time this fall. We had the opportunity to see similar Mitsubishi screens around the country last year, and it was amazing how far the big screen technology has progressed in the last decade.”

Mitsubishi has screens in many college and professional venues across the country, including screens similar to one set to be installed at Memorial Stadium. Other prominent stadiums with Mitsubishi screens include INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver (Broncos), Turner Field in Atlanta (Braves) and U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago (White Sox).

Mitsubishi expects to begin work on the installation of the new north screen later this month. The two existing HuskerVision screens will remain in place until after the Red-White Spring Game on April 15.
