Lincoln ? Joe McCray’s 3-pointer with 5.6 seconds remaining capped a 6-0 run in the final 23 seconds, lifting Nebraska to a 59-58 victory over No. 12/13 Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Trailing 58-56, Wes Wilkinson stole the ball at midcourt and found McCray at the top of the key. McCray then drilled his fourth 3-pointer of the afternoon to give the Huskers the lead for good.
McCray finish with 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting, while Nebraska countered Oklahoma’s inside presence with nine 3-pointers to record its second straight win over a ranked team and snapped Oklahoma’s seven-game winning streak against Nebraska dating back to 1999.
Oklahoma, which shared the Big 12 regular-season title last season, had a final opportunity to win in regulation. Terrell Everett took the inbounds passed and went the length of the court before his one-hander bounded harmlessly off the rim, sending the Husker faithful into a frenzy and onto the court.
While McCray’s shot provided the heroics, it was the play of Charles Richardson Jr. and Jason Dourisseau that led the Huskers to overcome a 10-point second-half deficit, the largest deficit overcome by Nebraska this season.
Richardson, the junior point guard from Maywood, Ill., turned in the finest game of his Husker career, totaling a career-high 15 points, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range with four assists. Richardson, whose previous career high was 10 against Colorado last season, set career highs in points and 3-pointers, as he reached double figures for the first time this season. His 3-pointer with 23.4 seconds left set the stage for Wilkinson and McCray to cap the dramatic finish.
Dourisseau scored 12 of his game-high 17 points after intermission and was one of three Huskers to finish in double figures. Nebraska held Oklahoma (9-3, 0-1 Big 12) to 42 percent shooting and also took advantage of second-chance opportunities, turning eight Sooner second-half turnovers into 13 points. Nebraska committed just two miscues in the final 20 minutes.
In the first half, Nebraska took early momentum with an 8-2 run in building its largest lead of the half at 16-12 after a Marcus Perry jumper. Oklahoma clawed back into the game before silencing the crowd with an 9-2 spurt to close the half with Nate Carter recording four of his six points in the run.
Oklahoma continued the run early in the second half when a jumper by Everett pushed the margin to 10 points at the 19:12 mark. Trailing 39-31, Dourisseau and Richardson led the comeback over the next five minutes as the Huskers used a 9-0 run to tie the score on a jumper by Douriesseau with 14:16 left.
The teams traded points over the next eight minutes before Richarson’s two free throws with 6:45 remaining gave the hosts a 49-47 lead. Bookout, who had not scored in the second half, then started a 7-0 OU run with a pair of baskets before a 3-pointer by Austin Johnson made it 54-49 with 4:58 remaining.
Trailing 56-50 after a Longar Longar basket, the Huskers used a free throw by Aleks Maric and a driving basket by Dourisseau to pull within 56-53 with 1:52 remaining. After David Godbolt hit both ends of a one-and-one to give OU a five-point lead, Richardson pulled Nebraska within two at 58-56 with 23.4 seconds remaining.
Kevin Bookout led OU with 14 points before fouling out with 2:42 remaining. David Godbold and Everett also finished in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Huskers return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11, as they travel to Kansas State. The game will be televised within the state by FSN Midwest and will be carried in Kansas as well as part of the Wildcat Television Network. Nebraska's second contest of the league slate can also be heard on the Pinnacle Sports Network and worldwide on the Internet at Huskers.com.
