Nebraska juniors Kurt Mann and Dane Todd are the latest Husker student-athletes to earn ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors. Both players were chosen to the first-team Academic All-America football team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as announced on Thursday.
The selection of Mann and Todd gives Nebraska four ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans in Head Coach Bill Callahan’s two seasons as head coach. Last season, linebacker Chad Sievers was a first-team selection, while cornerback Kellen Huston was a second-team selection. The first-team recognition for Mann and Todd gives Nebraska a nation-leading 62 all-time first-team football Academic All-Americans, and 85 total football academic All-Americans, when including 23 second-team honorees.
Nebraska was one of only three schools to place two players on the University Division first-team, and was the only school with a pair of juniors named to the team.
Todd was one of five players on the first-team University Division list who carry a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average. A Lincoln native, Todd is majoring in biological sciences and has been a first-team Academic All-District VII pick each of the past two seasons. On the field, Todd is in his first season as the Huskers’ starting fullback and has caught eight passes out of the backfield for 75 yards.
A native of Grand Island, Neb., Mann has been Nebraska’s starting center in all 22 games over the past two seasons. On the field, Mann was a second-team All-Big 12 pick by the Associated Press and an honorable-mention selection by the league’s coaches. Mann excels even more in the classroom, where he carries a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average in mechanized systems management. A two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection, Mann has been a first-team Academic All-District VII pick the past two years.
Mann and Todd were among three Big 12 Conference players named to the first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America team. The two Huskers were joined by Baylor junior punter Daniel Sepulveda.
Todd and Mann join Husker volleyball student-athletes Sarah Pavan and Christina Houghtelling in giving Nebraska four first-team Academic All-America selections during the 2005 fall semester.
