Huskers Continue Preparations for Sooners

Lincoln- The Nebraska football team donned half pads for a two-hour practice inside Memorial Stadium Wednesday, as preparations continued for the 11 a.m. ABC-televised match-up with Oklahoma on Saturday.

After practice, Head Coach Bill Callahan addressed the historical significance of the Nebraska-Oklahoma series, and discussed how his staff is working to emphasize it to the players. At various points in Tuesday’s practice, clips from the 1971 Game of the Century were played on the HuskerVision screens.

“We want to continue to educate our players on the rivalry and on the tradition and importance of this game,” Callahan said, “We want to give them a clear understanding of all of the players who have played in this classic game, what the game meant to them and what it means to us now.

“We want to really bridge a link to the past and draw upon that in getting our players to really be clear about what this game is all about.”

Callahan also announced that cornerback Zackary Bowman had been awarded a Blackshirt prior to Wednesday’s practice.

“Zack has played a considerable amount in the past few weeks and has been an outstanding contributor to what we are doing on defense,” Callahan said. “We wanted to award him with a Blackshirt because he has certainly earned that honor.”

Nebraska will continue its preparations with a Thursday afternoon practice.
