Tulsa, Okla. - The Nebraska men's tennis team continued to show strong results after the second day of main draw competition Saturday at the Wilson/ITA Men's Central Region Championships hosted by Tulsa University in Tulsa, Okla.
Juniors Adrian Szatmary and James Clow advanced into the quarterfinal round of the main draw singles at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Szatmary defeated Ross Cunningham of Tulsa in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Szatmary is set to play third-seeded and No. 49-ranked Tomas Bohunicky of Oklahoma State. Clow beat Aleksander Charpantidis of Tulsa, 3-6,7-6 (2), 6-4, and will play Sergi Vila of Drake.
"They are playing really well," Coach Kerry McDermott said. "Hopefully they will continue to keep playing at this level. Now they've just got to focus on getting through tough matches tomorrow."
In backdraw singles, senior Jerry Posch defeated Lucques Maasdorp of Tulsa in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. In the quarfinals Posch will play Andy Connelly of Tulsa.
"He's bounced back stong," McDermott said of Posch. "He definitely wants to get it together. He just really wants to play well because of the first-round loss. Hopefully he can continue to move forward."
Ayhan Oray advanced into the round of 16 in the backdraw singles for the Huskers, but fell to Eduardo Autran of Arkansas-Little Rock.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the Nov. 3-6 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by Ohio State.
