The Nebraska rifle team kicked off the 2005-06 season with a 4,686 to 4,565 win over Air Force at the Nebraska Rifle Range on Saturday. NU’s score is the second-best in program history following the scoring change in 2004-05. This is the sixth consecutive win over the Falcons for the Husker and the 12th in program history.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
“We shot a respectable score today,” Head Coach Launi Meili said. “It was an eye opener and a confidence builder for our girls so they know what they need to work on from here.”
Nebraska put up its best scores in smallbore where it finished with a team score of 2,336, which is just one point shy of the program’s record in the discipline of 2,337, which was earned at the NCAA Qualifier in 2004.
Senior captain Misty Chanek led the Huskers in smallbore, shooting a 591 in the event to tie her career best which she earned last season against Memphis on Nov. 13. Also shooting a career high for NU was sophomore Kim Chrostowski who finished with a 582, up two points from her previous best of 580.
“A lot of girls did meet their goals today,” Meili said. “That will really help their confidence as we head into conference competition in the coming weeks.”
In air rifle, the Huskers secured the four top scores in the discipline en route to a 2,350 team total. Leading the way was sophomore Andrea Franz?n shooting a 590 followed closely by Chanek with a 589.
Nebraska will again meet up with Air Force tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 23 for an 8 a.m. start at the Nebraska Rifle Range.
