Huskers Continue Preparations for Bears

Lincoln- The Nebraska football team donned half pads for a two-hour practice Memorial Stadium Wednesday, as preparations continued for the 6 p.m. FSN pay-per-view matchup with Baylor on Saturday.

In addressing the media after practice, Head Coach Bill Callahan emphasized that Wednesday’s practice was fairly routine in nature.

“It was a good practice,” Callahan said. “We really focused in on the regular Wednesday practice routine, working on short-yardage, goal line and third down plays. All of those are items that you always need to continue working on and getting better at.”

Callahan also stated that he has made no final decisions on NU’s travel roster for the game in Waco.

“I like to take it right down to the last hour,” Callahan said. “I have always been flexible with it and really don’t like to box myself in. If a player can play and is capable of playing, he will make the trip. If he is not, we will be very honest with him and let him know what the situation entails.”

Callahan also addressed the injury situation at the wide receiver position.

“Some of them are still a little banged up,” Callahan said. “We backed both (Isaiah) Fluellen and (Mark) LeFlore down, but we are encouraged and hopeful that we will see them on the practice field tomorrow. (Frantz) Hardy was out at practice today and he was moving very well. I was very encouraged by that.”

When asked about Baylor’s pass coverage, Callahan stated that the Bears employ a variety of schemes.

“They do a little bit of everything,” Callahan said. “They’ll play bump-and-run, they’ll play the press and the jam, and they will play free-access, which is an off technique where the corner is off the line of scrimmage about six to eight yards. They will also play a little cloud where they can come down and rotate and jam the receivers between five and seven yards. They have a lot of variety in their packages and try to keep you off balance.”

Nebraska will continue its preparations with a Thursday afternoon practice, before departing for Waco on Friday.
