Huskers Resume Play at Denver Fall Invitational

Denver-The Nebraska men’s tennis team continued action Saturday at the Denver Fall Invitational in Denver, Colo. Saturday’s competition is the second of three days in the Huskers’ first tournament of the fall.

 

In Singles Flight A, eighth-seed Richard Johnson of Pepperdine squeezed by junior James Clow in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Air Force’s Trevor Johnson defeated Husker senior Jerry Posch after a tight first set with final scores of 7-6 (4), 6-0.

 

In the consolation quarterfinals, Clow bounced back in the consolation bracker, picking up a pair of wins to advance to the Singles Flight A consolation Finals on Sunday.  He defeated Niklas Persson of Denver in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 in the quarterfinals before dominating Chad Tsuda of Colorado in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

 

In the quarterfinals of Singles Flight B, Geoffrey Chizever of Colorado slipped by freshman Ayhan Oray, posting a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

 

In the consolation round, sophomore Karl Jones defeated Robby Alexander of Air Force in three close sets of 6-7(5); 6-4; 6-3. Jones then bounced back to defeat Andrew Veerathanongdech of Air Force 6-0, 6-2 in the consolation quarterfinals.

 

In doubles action, Clow and Jones were set to face the top-seeded Utah’s duo of Zach Granger and Miron Mann. However, the match was canceled.

 

Posch and Szatmary, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, were defeated by Utah’s Nick Coutts and Jason Yapp, 8-4. Clow and Jones lost in a round three qualifier to Daniel Andrus and Francois VanderMerwe of Arizona, 8-6.

 

The tournament will conclude Sunday morning, beginning at 9 a.m. (central).
