Huskers Refine Details

LINCOLN ? The Nebraska football team held its final full-scale practice of the week Thursday, as the squad continued preparations for Saturday night’s season opener against Maine. The Huskers worked out for just under two hours in helmets and shoulder pads inside Memorial Stadium.

Head Coach Bill Callahan said his squad worked on refining several different areas of its game Thursday.

"We were really just focusing in and zeroing in on assignments, double-checking situations one more time," Callahan said. "Today we just had a special-teams scrimmage of about 25 minutes and just hit every area of special teams. Then we went into our red zone (offense), refined our passing in that area and came out and moved the ball. We did a few things in terms of substitutions."

Callahan also addressed the status of his three injured wide receivers?Mark LeFlore, Isaiah Fluellen and Chris Brooks?stating that each of the players have an outside chance at playing Saturday evening.

"We’ll just keep watching them and see how they respond (Friday)," Callahan said. "We have a walkthrough on Saturday, and then we will take a look at them in the pre-game and we’ll make a determination on how much and how far we want to stretch them on game day. We will see (how they feel). We will be cautious and very conservative in terms of letting them play. I don’t want to put them on the field if they’re not ready to play. We’ll substitute them intelligently, and we’ll get them reps if we can. If we can’t, we will back them down."

Nebraska will hold a short walkthrough practice Friday afternoon inside Memorial Stadium. The Huskers plan to take in a team movie together later during the evening, as decided upon among the coaches and co-captains Daniel Bullocks and Cory Ross.
