Nebraska: The Power of Red

Lincoln - The University of Nebraska plans to show the "Power of Red" in athletic competition, academic excellence and community involvement during the 2005-06 season, and the Nebraska Athletic Department is inviting the great Husker fans around the world to join in the "Power of Red."

Throughout the season, the Nebraska Athletic Department will recognize fans who publicly display the "Power of Red" by showing their "Red Pride" in a variety of ways.

The athletic department will sponsor, publish and provide prizes for elementary students who write essays on "Why I like to wear Red on Friday."  Students can submit their entries on Huskers.com.  Winning essays will be published in the official Nebraska Football Gameday Program.

In addition, fans can submit pictures of how they decorate their residences by sending photos to Huskers.com.  Each week the HuskerVision Big Screens will show a montage of the finalists and winners and photos will also be displayed on Huskers.com.

Husker fans are known for proudly flying Husker flags.  Each week this fall, a picture of a Husker flag being flown around the world will appear in the Nebraska Football Gameday Program.  Other flag photos will also be displayed on the Huskers.com "Power of Red" page.

To help promote wearing red on Fridays, NU students, faculty and staff will receive 25 percent off regularly priced items at Huskers Authentic with purchase via their N-Card throughout the football season.

Students and fans can submit their essays and digital pictures on Huskers.com by clicking on the "Power of Red" icon on the home page of the website.

Why I like to Wear Red on Fridays
Each week one essay from an elementary student will be printed in the Official Nebraska Game-Day Football Program.  Weekly winners will receive an autographed Coach Callahan offensive football poster and will be entered in an end-of-the-season contest.  The grand prize winner of the year’s contest will win a chance to take his/her entire home room class to the Nebraska men’s basketball game against Chicago State at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Dec. 17.  If the grand prize winner’s school is unable to attend because of its distance from Lincoln, the whole class will win autographed men’s basketball posters signed by the team.  Essays should be 50 words or less and sent to WearRed@Huskers.com.

Flag Promotion
Huskers across the world have shown their pride and support by flying the red-N-white flags when the Huskers play.  No one flies it larger than Bus Whitehead of Whitehead Oil in Lincoln.  The picture above is the U-Stop location near Haymarket Park, but Whitehead Oil also flies an oversized "N" flag at its station on Cornhusker Highway just east of Lincoln.  Fans are asked to submit their Husker flag photos for potential publication in this game program, as well as on Huskers.com.

The Nebraska Athletic Department is particularly interested in the Husker flags that are flown around the world.  To submit your flag photos, go to Huskers.com, click on "Power of Red" link on the home page, and click on RedPride@Huskers.com.
