Lincoln --- The Nebraska football team spent nearly three hours working out Sunday inside Memorial Stadium to conclude the final practice before start of the fall semester. Coach Bill Callahan was pleased with Nebraska's first full practice on the new FieldTurf and is looking forward to playing on the field in the season opener against Maine on Sept. 3.
"It was good today. We got on the field for the first full practice on this surface," Callahan said. "For the most part, it was good work and everyone got accustomed to the field. It is a good surface and it has some speed to it. It's still new, but it's going to be fast in two weeks time (after it's settled). It will be ready to go at game time and we are pleased with it."
Callahan said that freshman offensive lineman Rodney Picou has joined the squad after clearing academic requirements. "It's good to have him in the boat. He has worked hard to get to this point and now we'll move forward."
Callahan said that Picou, along with any returning players who were not on the training camp roster along with new walk-ons, would be able to start right into practice when the team gathers again. The Huskers, who are off Monday, will return to practice Tuesday without the services of wide receiver Mark LeFlore. Callahan said LeFlore's MRI came back and that LeFlore has a sprain that will likely keep him out for about a week.
