LINCOLN ? The Nebraska football team held its third of four two-a-day workouts Wednesday, beginning in the morning with a full-pad practice inside Cook Pavillion. A light walkthrough exercise followed in the afternoon inside Memorial Stadium.
For the second straight day, a Husker celebrating his 22nd birthday wore a yellow jersey during drills. Center Kurt Mann garnered the honor Wednesday, while cornerback Tierre Green and free safety Blake Tiedtke also were lauded for their practice efforts.
Callahan gave injury updates on several Huskers following the morning practice, but stressed that the high number of setbacks is nothing out of the ordinary for this time of the year.
“I think it’s just the normal bumps and bruises of training camp,” Callahan said. “We’re going to lose a guy or two for a practice, but by-and-large that happens this time of year. We’re optimistic that these guys are going to get back on the field sooner than later, and we’re optimistic about where we are at as a team. We are relatively healthy, nothing major of that nature.”
Among Callahan’s list were nine players who sat out drills, including offensive tackle Lydon Murtha, who is expected to return at full speed by a target date of Sept. 9. Callahan also mentioned that tight end Matt Herian’s condition continues to improve as he has been running pain free. Callahan said he would like to have him back possibly by the end of the non-conference season, if not sooner.
In other team news, Callahan confirmed that strong safety Shane Siegel had decided to leave the team.
Nebraska continues fall training campThursday afternoon with pre-season workout number 16 of 29. Defensive Coordinator Kevin Cosgrove and requested assistant coaches will be available to speak with the media following exercises.
