Maric Helps Australia to Fourth-Place Finish

Cordoba, Argentina --- The Australian National Team dropped its second straight contest as it fell to Canada, 79-74, Sunday night in the bronze medal game of the U21 World Championships. The Crocs suffered their first setback Saturday night with a 96-73 loss to Lithuania in the semifinals and ended the tournament with a 6-2 record.

Nebraska sophomore center Aleks Maric, who was among the top rebounders in the tournament, finished with 16 points and a team-high nine boards for the Crocs while Bard Newly added a team-best 17 points on 4-of-11 shoting. Maric hit 7-of-12 attempts from the field and added three steals while playing a team-high 30 minutes. Maric concluded the World Championships averaging 9.4 rebounds per game to rank second in the 11-team field.

Despite opening the tournament with six straight victories, the Crocs failed to gain a medal as it fell for the second straight night. Canada, which upset tournament favorite United States in the first game of the medal round, earned the bronze by holding Australia to just 4-of-20 from 3-point range while also outrebounding the Crocs 40-34.

The Aussies, which entered the game as one of the top shooting teams in the tourney, hit 50 percent (22-of-44) inside the arc but missed multiple opportunities from long distance as Canada pulled away in the third period. Australia trailed by just one point, 41-40, at the intermission, but fell behind by six after the third period and could not pull back within reach.
