Lincoln --- Coach Scott Jacobson announced Thursday that Hayden Perez has joined the Nebraska women's tennis staff as an assistant coach. Perez fills the spot left open when former Husker assistant Sadhaf Pervez returned to coach at her alma mater, Ohio State University.
"This is a great opportunity for me and I'm excited to make the transition from a good conference like the ACC to another strong league in the Big 12," Perez said. "In working with Scott, I thought this would be an enjoyable experience and that I would be able to continue to work with student-athletes at a high level of competition."
Perez came to the Huskers from Florida State, where he spent the past season helping the Seminoles to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Despite finishing with an 11-12 record after falling in the first round of the postseason, FSU was ranked No. 43 in the final ITA team poll, just four places behind the Huskers.
"Hayden has a great energy that will help get the most out of the kids on the team," Jacobson said. "He is a positive person who shows genuine concern for people and that is the kind of person we desire in our program."
Before joining the FSU staff, Perez served as assistant women's tennis coach at Wyoming during the 2003-04 campaign. He also previously worked as the Director of Player Development for the Intermountain Section of the United States Tennis Association from 2002 to 2003. With the USTA, Perez oversaw the junior competition, including scheduling, rankings and endorsement opportunities.
Perez served as a volunteer assistant coach at the Air Force Academy in 2002-03, after serving one season as an assistant coach. Before joining the coaching staff at the Academy, Perez was an assistant teaching pro at Woodlake Racquet Club in Oklahoma City and was a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Cameron University.
Perez earned team MVP honors twice at Cameron, where he earned a business administration degree in 1999. He advanced to the finals of the Midwest region finals in 1996, and was ranked fourth in the Men's Open USTA National division during his two-year career. Perez came to Cameron after two seasons at Collin County (Texas) CC where he helped the team to an NJCAA team title in 1995 when he picked up a doubles national title. Perez earned first-team All-America honors as a sophomore.
