LUBBOCK, Texas ? University of Nebraska third baseman Alex Gordon (Lincoln, Neb.) was honored Monday, as one of 13 semifinalists for the 2005 Brooks Wallace College Player-of-the-Year Award.
Gordon, who was chosen as the Big 12 Player of the Year by the Rosenblatt Report on Monday, enters this week’s Big 12 Tournament hitting .396 with 16 homers and 53 RBIs. The first-team All-American has started all 58 games for the fourth-ranked Huskers and ranks among the Big 12 leaders in 11 of 12 categories.
The original 64 members of the watch list were trimmed to 13 players by the College Baseball Foundation on Monday, as Gordon and Texas shortstop Seth Johnston were the only two Big 12 players chosen as semifinalists.
The CBF National Selection Committee will narrow the list to three finalists following the NCAA Super Regionals, with an announcement in Omaha on June 16. The finalists, with their head coaches and parents, will be invited to Lubbock, Texas, for a golf tournament and a schedule of related activities, in addition to the award banquet. The trophy and winners will become part of the permanent display in the College Baseball Hall of Fame Museum currently under construction.

Dedicated to the memory of the former Texas Tech player and assistant coach, Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District Six his senior year, when he led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament. After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant, and later as an assistant coach. In the summer of 1984 he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27.
