Huskers Tied for Sixth After Day One of Big 12 Golf Championships

The Nebraska men’s golf team posted a round of 303 on Friday in the first round of the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championships at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas. The 303 team score left the Huskers in a three-way tie for sixth place with Texas A&M and Baylor, 18 shots behind team leader OklahomaState.

Oklahoma State leads the team race after posting a three-under round of 285. The Cowboys are five shots in front of Oklahoma (290), with Missouri (295), Texas Tech (299) and Iowa State (302) rounding out the top five. Three-time defending Big 12 Champion Texas is tied for 11th place after an opening-round 311.

The Huskers were led individually on Friday by sophomore Brady Schnell who posted a one-over par round of 73 on the par-72, 7,330-yard Whispering Pines layout. Schnell began his round on the back nine with an even-par 36, then followed with a 37 on his second nine, the front nine at Whispering Pines. Schnell finished with three birdies and four bogeys and his 73 left him in a tie for 11th place.

Husker junior Judd Cornell is tied for 22nd place after posting a 76 on Friday. Nebraska’s other three golfers, sophomore Drew Reynolds, junior Kent Schreiner and freshman Mark Pillen each posted a 77 on Friday and are part of a 10-player logjam in a tie for 28th place.

Jeremy Alcorn of Baylor leads the individual race after posting a five-under 67 in the opening round, one shot better than Justin Fraley of Oklahoma and Tyler Leon of OklahomaState. A total of 10 golfers posted under-par rounds on the first day of action.

The tournament continues with the second round on Saturday morning, beginning at 8 a.m. The 54-hole tournament concludes with the final round on Sunday.
