Huskers Advance to Championship Round

Orlando, Fla. ? The top-ranked Nebraska bowling team has advanced to the championship round of the 2005 NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship tomorrow at the Wekiva Lanes in Orlando.  Nebraska will be attempting to win its second straight national championship, after winning the first-ever NCAA Women's Bowling Championship in 2004.

The Huskers earned their spot in the finals by defeating No. 2 seed Fairleigh Dickinson 4-3-1 in the third round of Friday's action.  The match needed an eighth game roll-off after the two teams finished the best-of-seven match tied at 3-3-1, and Nebraska came out on top in the extra game 247-194.  The top-seeded Huskers had advanced through the winner's bracket with two victories earlier on Friday. In the opening round, Nebraska swept No. 8 seed Fayetteville State in four straight games, before defeating No. 5 seed Sacred Heart four games to one in their second match of the day.

On Saturday afternoon, Nebraska will face off against the winner of the matchup between Fairleigh Dickinson and Central Missouri State scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Huskers will square off with the winner of that match in a best-of-seven Baker matchup.  If Nebraska is defeated in the first matchup, another best-of-seven Baker match will be played, however if the Huskers are victorious they will capture the national crown. The final round could be a repeat of last year's championship match if CMS wins.  The Huskers defeated the Jennies in a eighth game roll-off in last year's final.

“We are having an excellent event and everyone is looking forward to playing tomorrow,” commented head coach Bill Straub.

Tomorrow’s final rounds will be aired on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday, April 17th on ESPN2 at 4:30 p.m. CDT. For full results on today's action, please visit http://www.ncaasports.com/
