Chumreonlert, T?trault Earn All-America Honors

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>West Point, N.Y. ? Sophomore Paul Chumreonlert and freshman Stephen T?trault earned their first collegiate All-America honors at the 2005 NCAA Championships event finals held Saturday, April 9 at the HollederCenter in West Point, N.Y.  Chumreonlert had a solid showing on the pommel horse for fifth-place with a score of 9.587, while T?trault capped off a monumental rookie season to tie for fifth-place on the vault (9.30).  This is the second consecutive season that the Huskers have placed an All-American on the vault after Josh Rasile finished sixth (9.55) last year.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Chumreonlert was the first NU gymnast to take the stage, competing second to last in the pommel horse order following an outstanding routine from PennState’s Luis Vargas who marked a score of 9.787 for the event title.  Chumreonlert quickly followed suite, posting the third highest pommel horse score of his career (9.587) and NU’s first All-America award on the apparatus since Marshall Nelson’s second-place finish in 1998.

“Paul [Chumreonlert] hit probably his second best routine of the season,” Allen said.  “That’s a pretty big deal considering the nerves and competition he was dealing with.  He deserves all the congratulations in the world for his performance today.”

T?trault followed as the No. 7 gymnast on the vault behind many talented competitors including Oklahoma’s David Henderson who edged T?trault out for the 2005 MPSF vault title at the conference championships on March 26.  Henderson finished the NCAA finals in third-place with a score of 9.375, once again topping the Nebraska freshman who unfortunately failed to stick his landing.

“A gymnast doesn’t get many shots at sticking a landing in this event and today just wasn’t T?trault’s day,” Allen said.  “He hit it perfectly in the event qualifier, but just couldn’t repeat and that’s not out of the ordinary at this level.”

Chumreonlert finishes the season with two pommel horse titles and a career-high score of 9.65, which he earned in Nebraska’s win over Iowa on Feb. 26.  Also a top rings competitor, the NU sophomore claimed a pair of titles on that apparatus and marked a career-high score of 9.70 against Minnesota on March 6.

T?trault, who spent three weeks as the nation’s top-ranked vaulter, earned four titles in that event, the most of any Huskers on a single apparatus.  He posted a career-high score of 9.65 against Ohio State on Feb 18.

The Nebraska native also earned an event title on the pommel horse against Air Force on March 13 and marked his career-high in that event with a 9.30 at the NCAA individual event qualifier on April 8.

In the coming weeks, T?trault will head to Canada to compete at the Canadian Nationals before returning for his sophomore season with the Huskers.

“T?trault is originally from Winnipeg, so he can try out for the Canadian or the U.S. National teams,” Allen said.  “He’s going to go for Canada and I support that decision because he’s got a really great shot up there and once he gets a few international meets under his belt he’s going to come back and be an unbelievable force next season.”
