The top-ranked Nebraska bowling team looks to defend its national title next week at the 2005 NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship held in Orlando, Fla. The Huskers made history last year as they earned the first-ever NCAA championship, their sixth national title overall. Before women’s bowling was elevated to NCAA sport status, Nebraska earned five Intercollegiate Bowling Championships (IBC), including two since becoming a varsity sport in 1997. NU will be joined by seven other schools at the championship, including the 2004 NCAA runner-up, Central Missouri State.
The competition begins Thursday, April 14, with best of seven Baker-game matches, and will continue until Friday evening when just three teams will remain. The team with the highest pinfall total will advance to Saturday’s championship match, while the other two team will compete in the losers bracket. The winner of the losers bracket will face-off against the winner’s bracket winner. Should the losers bracket winner prevail in the first match, one more best of seven Baker-game match will be played to determine the NCAA champion. The Baker format allows five team members to follow each other in order, each bowling a complete frame until a complete (10 frame) game is bowled. Based on the pinfall of the qualifying round, the teams are placed in a double-elimination bracket. Teams compete against each other in a best-of-seven Baker-style bowling competition.
