Huskers Compete in Day One of NCAA Championships

West Lafayette, Ind. - Sophomore Lauren Bailey and junior Amie Buoy represented Nebraska in day one of the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.

Bailey placed 41st overall with a time of 4:51.59 in the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle, while Buoy got her first taste of NCAA Championship action with a 27th-place finish on the one-meter dive with a score of 240.05.

Neither qualified for Thursday night's finals, but both will compete on Friday as Bailey will swim in the 400-yard individual medley and Buoy will dive on the three meter.  Bailey will also compete in the 1,650-yard freestyle on Saturday.

Bailey's time of 4:51.59 marked the fifth time this season that she met the NCAA provisional qualifying mark, and was her fourth fastest time this year. 

Wisconsin's Carly Piper won the preliminary event in a pool record time of 4:39.71.

Blythe Hartley of Southern California earned first in the preliminaries on the one meter, while Texas A&M's Rosie Whiting was the highest Big 12 finisher in 20th place (259.75).
