Lincoln ? The Nebraska women’s basketball team earned an invitation into the 2005 SportsView.TV Postseason WNIT late Sunday night, and will play at Marquette on Thursday, March 17 at 7 p.m. The game time was announced by Marquette on Monday morning.
The Huskers, who finished the regular season with a 17-13 overall record, including an 8-8 mark in Big 12 Conference play, will take on the Golden Eagles at a time to be determined on Monday. Marquette finished the regular season with an 18-11 overall record, including an 8-6 mark in Conference USA.
If Nebraska can get past Marquette, which produced an impressive 12-2 record on its homecourt at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, the Huskers will take on the winner of the Creighton at Iowa contest scheduled for Friday, March 18. The date, time and site of second-round games have not been determined.
The Huskers were one of two Big 12 Conference teams chosen for the 32-team field, joining Texas A&M, which will play host to Tulsa in the first round on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Nebraska, which advanced to the second round of the Postseason WNIT last year by knocking off Drake, before losing to Oregon State, also played in the 2004 SportsView.TV Preseason WNIT. The Huskers defeated Western Illinois 74-71, in the opening round, before losing at Notre Dame in the second round.
Marquette also battled the Fighting Irish during the non-conference season, losing to Notre Dame 50-47 at the Al McGuire Center on Dec. 12. The Golden Eagles' only other loss at home came with a 60-54 setback to Charlotte on Jan. 14.
Marquette does own an impressive resume of home victories, including a 63-51 win over Penn State, a 63-57 home win over DePaul, a 71-55 victory over TCU and a 68-57 win over Houston. All four of those squads advanced to the 2005 NCAA Tournament, when the 64-team field was announced earlier on Sunday.
