College Station, Texas - Junior Rachel Schlatter and sophomore Lauren Bailey highlighted a morning of impressive performances for the Huskers as session four of the Big 12 Championships was completed in College Station, Texas.
Bailey qualified for her second finals event of the meet with the sixth-fastest time in the 400-yard individual medley. Bailey's time of 4:22.26 was one of seven NCAA provisional qualifying marks in a talented field of individual medley swimmers from Texas and Texas A&M. The San Mateo, Calif., native will attempt to defend her 2004 400-yard individual medley conference title tonight.
Bailey was accompanied by sophomores Bailey Ingles and Casey Schnack. Both qualified for Friday night's consolation finals as Ingles set a career-best time of 4:26.53 for 11th place, and Schnack swam a time of 4:27.79 to place 15th.
Schlatter gave the Huskers a boost in the breaststroke events, as she placed seventh in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:03.79. Freshman Adrienne Goodman placed 10th in a career best time of 1:04.09 to qualify for the consolation finals. Junior Lana Baker (18th, 1:06.34) and freshman Lynn Siemert (21st, 1:08.22) qualified for the bonus finals.
Nebraska's best team event of the morning came in the 200-yard freestyle, where sophomore Kate Wheeler led six Husker swimmers to career-best times. Wheeler's time of 1:50.55 was also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark that earned her 10th place and a berth in the consolation finals. Sophomore Katie Bowden also qualified for the consolation finals (16th, 1:51.88), while sophomore Michelle Criss (19th, 1:52.24) and junior Esmie Holderman (21st, 1:52.61) will swim in the bonus finals.
Betsy Grover was another freshman to make noise in her first conference meet, as she swam a career best at Nebraska with a time of 56.11, good for ninth place and just more than three-tenths away from making the finals. Grover will compete in Friday night's consolation finals, along with senior Diana Torres (18th, 57.84). Freshman Haley Koss (20th, 58.41, career best) and junior Alex King (58.47, 21st) qualified for the bonus finals.
The final swimming event of the morning saw NU sophomore Emilee Crawford break her career best in the 100-yard backstroke and qualify for the consolations finals with a 14th-place finish in 57.98. Junior Kate Dulgar placed 20th in 1:00.58 while Torres was 23rd in 1:01.18.
The women's one-meter diving will start at 5 p.m., followed with finals at 6 p.m.
