Lincoln ? The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team moved up to No. 5 nationally this week in the latest National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches poll released Monday.
This is also the fourth straight week the Huskers rank No. 1 in the NCAA South Central region, as well as first in the Big 12.
The Huskers picked up their biggest win of the year by defeating No. 4 Utah, 196.65-196.60, Sunday afternoon at the DevaneyCenter. The win brought NU to 3-4 on the season and extended Nebraska’s home unbeaten streak in the DevaneyCenter to 54 regular-season competitions.
Freshman Emily Parsons captured two event titles and tied senior Richelle Simpson for second-place honors in the all-around with a score of 39.475. Parsons claimed the floor (9.925) and vault (9.925) titles, while tying for second (9.90) on beam and finishing 11th on bars (9.725). Simpson tied for second on floor (9.90) and beam (9.90) and also tied for fourth on vault (9.875) and sixth on bars (9.80). In addition, sophomore Michele Zabawa earned the uneven bars title with a 9.85.
The Huskers continue their month-long home stand with the annual Masters Classic Sunday, Feb. 27 at the DevaneyCenter. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will feature No. 10 Denver, No. 20 Auburn and Kentucky.
