Lincoln, Neb.?The Nebraska women's tennis team moved up in the ITA national rankings from No. 74 to No. 52 on Tuesday, Feb. 8. NU defeated two ranked teams last weekend, No. 44 Iowa and No. 68 Washington State, to improve its season record to 6-0. The two victories extended the Huskers' home non-conference streak to 60.
On Friday, Feb. 4, NU faced then-No. 44 Iowa. The Huskers started quickly by winning all three doubles matches. Seniors Gitte Ostermann, ranked No. 19 nationally in singles play, and Katie Garcia defeated Iowa's Meg Racette and Hillary Mintz, who were ranked No. 55 nationally. In singles No. 19 Ostermann won in a three-set thriller over No. 103 Racette, 6-4, 6-7, 6-0.
On Sunday, Feb. 6, the Huskers faced then-No. 68 Washington State. The Big Red benefitted from the solid play of junior Ewelina Skaza, ranked No. 25 in the central region in singles play, who defeated Amy Toth, 6-2, 6-4. Skaza is one of four Husker singles players who have yet to drop a set this season.
No. 52 Nebraska will hit the courts on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m., when NU opens Big 12 Conference play with No. 72 Missouri at the Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln.
