The No. 4 Nebraska wrestling team rode a pin from B.J. Wright at 157 pounds and an overtime win from 165-pound wrestler Jacob Klein to defeat No. 7 Minnesota, 21-12, Tuesday afternoon at the NU Coliseum in <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Lincoln.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
“We came ready to wrestle a tough opponent today,” said head coach Mark Manning. “We sent a message with this win.”
Wright, the seventh-ranked 157-pound wrestler in the nation, pinned Nik Lentz 2:01 into their match. The win gave the Huskers a 9-3 lead in the dual, a lead they would not relinquish. Today’s match is the third time this year a Wright win in a dual has given undefeated Nebraska the lead for good.
The following match, featuring seventh-ranked Klein against No. 11 Matt Nagel, was more hotly contested. After a scoreless first period, Nagel chose to start the second period down, and earned an escape 56 seconds into the period. Klein answered with an escape of his own 55 seconds into the third period. After the first overtime was scoreless, Klein registered an escape just moments before the end of the second overtime. He rode Nagel through the duration of the third overtime.
After 10th-ranked 174-pound wrestler Marc Harwood fell in overtime to Josh McLay, NU bounced back with a pair of wins. Travis Pascoe, the seventh-ranked 184-pound wrestler, surged to a 5-1 lead en route to a 10-4 win over No. 6 Roger Kish and No. 15 B.J. Padden held on to defeat Matt Koz at 197 pounds 3-2.
Second-ranked heavyweight Cole Konrad ran off seven unanswered points to defeat Mitch Manstedt, 7-1, to register the third of four Minnesota wins on the afternoon. No. 10 125-pound wrestler Matt Keller started his match on a 7-0 run to defeat Andrew Domingues, 8-1. The dual ended with a 6-3 victory for seventh-ranked 133-pound wrestler Mack Reiter over Dominick Moyer.
The dual began with third-ranked 141-pound wrestler Matt Murray defeating Manuel Rivera, 8-2, followed by Minnesota answering with a 4-2 victory from C.P. Schlatter over Chris Nedens at 149 pounds.
The dual victory pushed Nebraska’s record to 8-0 on the year. The win is Nebraska’s 19th straight dual win in Lincoln, an ongoing school record. The Huskers can tie another school record in their next action, on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Lone Star Duals against No. 3 Michigan. A win would be Nebraska’s ninth consecutive win to start the season tying the school record set in 2000-01, Mark Manning’s first year as head coach.
