Lincoln - The Nebraska men’s tennis team, fresh off a 4-3 upset at 16th-ranked Rice on Monday, fell to top-ranked and defending national champion Baylor, 7-0, Friday at the Woods Tennis Center. It was the Bears’ season opener and the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams. With the loss, NU fell to 1-1 on the season, while BU improved to 1-0.
“I thought we played a good match,” NU Head Coach Kerry McDermott said. “We competed well and had some great opportunities. I’m pleased that the guys fought hard.”
In No. 1 singles, junior Jerry Posch played well in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Baylor’s Benjamin Becker, the 2004 NCAA singles champion. At No. 2 singles, BU’s Lars Poerschke, ranked 11th nationally, defeated Adrian Szatmary, 6-3, 6-1.
Nebraska sophomore James Clow took Baylor’s Michal Kokta to a seventh game in the first set before falling 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4 singles spot.
In doubles play, NU’s No. 3 team of Posch and Clow had an excellent chance to earn Nebraska’s lone win. Posch and Clow had a match point against Baylor’s Greg Shearer and Kokta, but the Bears’ tandem managed to win the tiebreaker 9-7 to pull out a 9-8 win.
