Lincoln, Neb.?The No. 71 Nebraska women’s tennis team begins the 2005 spring season Thursday, Jan. 20 against in-state foe Creighton in Lincoln at the Woods Tennis Center. NU looks to extend its home non-conference winning streak to 55 and its winning streak against CU to 20.
The Huskers enter the match with the No. 1 ITA Central Region ranking in singles play, along with numerous individual rankings. The Huskers are looking to biuld off of a 16-9 record and a final national ranking of No. 75 in 2004.
Senior Gitte Ostermann is one of five returning letterwinners. She is ranked No. 19 nationally and received a No.1 singles regional ranking for the start of the 2005 spring season. In doubles play, Ostermann and freshman Imke Reimers earned a No. 11 doubles ITA Central Regional ranking. Last fall, Ostermann participated in the ITA National Indoor Championships for the second time in her career, where she posted a 1-1 record. She also won the ITA Central Regional championship.
Three Huskers will experience their first team dual on Thursday against the Bluejays. Junior Ewelina Skaza, a transfer from Miami, earned a No. 25 ITA Central Regional ranking in singles play. During her freshman season with the Hurricanes, Skaza was ranked No. 118 nationally. Freshmen Ellinor Zugner and Reimers will also make their home debut.
