Lincoln ? With spring drills set to begin later in two weeks, the Husker Home Run Club is sponsoring a pair of free preseason events this month in Omaha and Grand Island.
The first event will take place in Omaha on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Holiday Inn (72nd and Grover) with the second preview coming one week later on Saturday, Jan., 29, in Grand Island at the Home Federal Savings and Loan (3311 West Stolley Park Road). Both events will run from 9 to 11 a.m. and are free to the public.
Fans at both events will be able to see the 2004 highlight tape, meet members of the 2005 Husker squad, participate in an autograph session and listen to comments from the Husker coaching staff. Juice, coffee and donuts will also be provided at both events, while fans will be able to join the Husker Home Run Club at both functions.
The Huskers enter the 2005 campaign ranked 31st in the Collegiate Baseball Preseason poll and return 16 letterwinners, including six starters from last season. The returnees are highlighted by first-team All-American Alex Gordon, who was chosen as the preseason national player of the year by Collegiate Baseball. Gordon is one of four returning All-Big 12 selections back for 2005, joining first baseman Curtis Ledbetter, shortstop Joe Simokaitis and left-hander Zach Kroenke.
The 2005 season begins on Feb. 17, as the Huskers will begin a four-game series at Hawaii-Hilo. Nebraska opens the 32-game home schedule on Friday, March 11 against South DakotaState.
