Dallas, Texas -- Nebraska sophomore Amanda Burgoyne finished fourth overall at the 2005 U.S. Amateur Championship which was being held at the Don Carter All-Star West Lanes in Dallas, Friday evening. Burgoyne averaged a 198.79 through 24 games with a total pinfall of 9,922. She finished match-play with a 19-5 record and automatically earned a spot on Team USA 2005.
Burgoyne served as a member on Team USA 2004 after a fifth place finish at last years U.S. Amateur.
Besides the five bowlers who automatically make the squad, three other bowlers were chosen by a national selection committee Friday evening. Former U.S. Amateur champion (2002-04) Shannon Pluhowsky was chosen by the committee to serve on Team USA 2005. Pluhowsky finished the tournament in 13th place with an overall pinfall of 9,623. She averaged a 195.90 through 24 games and has been a member of Team USA since 2001.
Adrienne Miller finished with a pinfall of 9,648 and a 194.33 average, ending the tournament in 10th place.
Former Husker, Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty was also chosen by the national selection committee to become a member of Team USA 2005. She finished seventh overall with a pinfall of 9,793 and a 199.44 average. Asbaty has been on Team USA since 1999. In all, three of the eight members of Team USA in 2005 have ties to the Husker bowling program.
Team USA 2005 will compete in a number of tournaments all over the world this year, including the World Games, the World Tenpin Bowing Association (WTBA) World Women’s Championships, Tournament of the Americas, WTBA American Zone Championships and the AMF World Cup.
The Nebraska bowling team will be back in action Jan. 21 at the Greater Ozark Invitational in Springfield, Mo.
