Singapore -- Nebraska bowler Shannon Pluhowsky is representing the USA in the 40th annual AMF Bowling World Cup, taking place this week at the Superbowl SAFRA Mount Faber facility in Singapore. The tournament includes representatives from 96 different countries in both the men’s and women’s competition. The bowlers are competing in qualifying and also in single elimination. Qualifying begins on Thursday where the top 24 bowlers advance.
The AMF World Cup kicked off today with two groups. Leading the women after six games is Ann-Maree Putney of Australia with an average of 231. Pluhowsky is tied with Yosel Leon of Puerto Rico for 11th place with an average of 208 after six games.
Pluhowsky, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., is familiar with the AMF Bowling World Cup. In 2002, she became the first American to be crowned the world champion since 1990. Pluhowsky was just twenty years old when she won her first world title, which included a 299 game in the qualifying round. Then last year, she nearly became the first person to repeat as Bowling World Cup champion in 20 years, finishing in second place behind Kerrie Ryan-Ciach of Canada.
The championship match is scheduled for Sunday Dec. 12.
