After averaging 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds over his first two career games, freshman guard Joe McCray was named co-Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Nov. 28. McCray helped the Huskers to a pair of season-opening wins with an average margin of victory of 38.5 points.
McCray hit 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from the floor while ranking second on the team in scoring. He led the Huskers with six three-pointers, including three in each contest, and tied for fourth on the squad in rebounding. McCray's four steals ranked second on the squad, as the Huskers had 26 steals while forcing 39 turnovers in the two games.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., McCray is the first Husker since Andrew Drevo in 2003 to earn a Big 12 weekly honor. Drevo was named the league's rookie of the week on March 3, 2003. It was the second straight week the Huskers had a rookie of the week honoree, as Nate Johnson also earned the accolade on Feb. 24.
Along with McCray, Terrell Everett of Oklahoma was named co-Rookie of the Week after helping OU to a 2-1 record at the Great Alaska Shootout. He posted 14.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game to be named to all-tournament team. Everett and last week's winner, Taj Gray of Oklahoma, are both junior transfers, while McCray is the first freshman to earn the rookie of the week honor this season.
Iowa State's Jared Homan was named the player of the week in a vote of a media panel that covers the conference. Homan averaged 13.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots per game in two wins by the Cyclones.
