Minneapolis, Minn. - The Nebraska swimming and diving team sits in third place following day one of competition of the 11-team Minnesota Invitational.
The Huskers were paced by Lauren Bailey’s second-place performance in the 500-yard freestyle. Bailey swam a time of 4:50.01, putting her in third on Nebraska’s all-time chart. Bailey runner-up to Carly Piper of Wisconsin, who swam a meet record time of 4:45.99.
The 500-yard freestyle proved to be the Huskers’ most successful event of the day, as teammate Kate Wheeler finished third behind Bailey in 4:54.65, and Casey Schnack was fifth with a time of 4:57.19.
Junior Amie Buoy contributed valuable points in the one-meter competition, finishing sixth with 258 points. Freshman Lynn Siemert continued to impress by earning a sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.21).
The Huskers also scored points in both relay events. The 200-freestyle relay of Siemert, Michelle Criss, Alex King and Wheeler finished fifth a time of 1:37.13. Schnack, Rachel Schlatter, Betsy Grover and Wheeler finished sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:55.52.
Competition resumes tomorrow at 11 a.m. with preliminary events. Finals will start at 6 p.m.
