Lincoln ? Senior Anne Steffan successfully executed a squeeze bunt for a base hit to lift the Nebraska softball team to a 1-0 eight-inning victory over Kansas in the Husker Fall Classic at Bowlin Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game was scoreless through the first seven innings and in accordance with the international tie breaker, each team placed a runner on second in the eighth inning.
Kansas was unable to advance its runner past second, as sophomore right-handed pitcher Ashley Debuhr got a fly out, a pop out and Jackie Vasquez was out at third after oversliding the bag on a stolen base attempt to end the threat.
In the bottom half of the frame, freshman Cassie Kleinsmith was the Husker runner at second. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior Lizzy Rock. With the winning run at third, Steffan laid down a perfect bunt and the Jayhawks had no play as Kleinsmith crossed home plate.
The win improved Nebraska’s fall record to 11-1. DeBuhr tossed a complete game six-hit shutout to record the victory. Three different Husker pitchers combined to pitch 15 scoreless innings in NU’s two victories on Saturday.
Nebraska concludes the fall season with a pair of games on Sunday. The Huskers face ColoradoState at 10 a.m. and meet Nebraska-Omaha at 5:30 p.m. to conclude the tournament. Both games will be played at Bowlin Stadium and admission is free.
