Lincoln - Heavy showers forced the Nebraska football team inside Cook Pavilion Tuesday afternoon as it resumed its off-week workout schedule with a two-hour practice in half pads.
The Huskers conducted developmental work for younger players in the latter portion of practice.
"It was a good practice today," Head Coach Bill Callahan said. "We continued to work on some of the improvable areas that we identified from Saturday’s game. We worked extensively with short yardage and goal line, and we also put a premium on our third-down nickel defense, our coverage and also our pass package. We really tried to emphasize those two areas, which we desperately need to improve. If we can improve those areas, we’ll make huge strides going into the Kansas game."
Callahan also announced NU’s player of the week awards for the week of the Pittsburgh game. Junior defensive end Wali Muhammad and senior cornerback Kellen Huston earned co-defensive players of the week, and sophomore defensive back Brandon Rigoni was named special teams player of the week. Junior wide receiver Marque McCray and junior cornerback Joey Robison were tabbed for their work with the scout team, while Callahan honored the entire offensive unit for its work during the week.
Muhammad was also awarded a Blackshirt at the conclusion of practice for his outstanding efforts early on this season, particularly in last Saturday’s 24-17 road win at Pittsburgh. Muhammad recorded three tackles, two pass breakups, one tackle-for-loss, one interception, one forced fumble and five quarterback hurries against the Panthers.
The Huskers will continue their off-week schedule Wednesday and Thursday before taking Friday off.
