Huskers Prepare for Game Week

Lincoln-Nebraska took the field Saturday morning donning game jerseys, in an effort to closely simulate what they will experience when the season opens on Sept. 4 against Western Illinois.

Head Coach Bill Callahan was pleased with the opportunities this type of simulation provided.

“Today was a good dry run,” Callahan said.  “We got a lot of things accomplished from a game day perspective.  I think that it is important for our players to go out to see logistically how everything is going to be done.  The players got acclimated to the routine, to the pregame and to the halftime, and they know exactly what to expect when we tee it up a week from today.”

Overall, Callahan felt the team performed well in game-like situations.

“The team did an excellent job today reviewing the situations and transitioning from one situation to the next,” Callahan said.  “For example, we had backed up, then we had goal line, then we had kickoff after a safety.  We tried to cover a lot of those odd-ball situations that come up during the course of a game.”

The Huskers will tighten their focus in the upcoming week, as they prepare for the Leathernecks.

“We will scale down the game plan and have plays that we know, that we can execute, and that we feel good about,” Callahan said.  “That is what we will feature on Saturday night.”

Fans can expect the offense to run off a script at the start of the game, something typical of the West Coast Offense.

“We script the first 15 plays for every game situation,” Callahan said.  “That is something I have always done with the staff and whether or not we give that to the players will remain to be seen.”

NU continues preparations on Sunday with a light practice in the morning.
