Coach Callahan's Football 101 for Women Raises $35,000 for Breast Cancer Research

Lincoln -- Nebraska Head Football Coach Bill Callahan hosted the first-annual Coach Callahan’s Football 101 for Women in Lincoln on Thursday evening. The event was perhaps the largest of its kind and a huge success. Sponsored by the Southeast Hematology Group and The Embassy Suites, more than 1,050 fans attended.  The participants were treated to a tour of Memorial Stadium, a tunnel walk with Coach Callahan, uniform, ankle taping and weight lifting demonstrations in the afternoon. Then beginner, intermediate and advanced classroom talks featuring the Husker football assistant coaches, concluded the day’s events after a buffet dinner at "halftime".

Participants represented 14 different states from Hawaii to Virginia, and 10 decades women from nine-to-94 were in attendance.

At the end of the evening, Coach Callahan presented Greg Carroll, the representative for the National Breast Cancer Federation, a mock check for $35,000. An authentic check will be presented at a later date. Coach Callahan addressed the women at the beginning and end of the evening, and talked about the importance of breast cancer research, as he lost his mother to breast cancer a little more than two years ago.

The next Coach Callahan Charity event will be the Coach Callahan 5K Fun/Run Walk on Aug. 21. Proceeds from that event will go to Juvenile Diabetes and the University Libraries Electronic Resources Fund.
