Huskers Complete Week Three of Spring Ball

Lincoln --The Husker football team moved indoors for their last practice of the week as cooler temperatures and a light rain hit Lincoln.  As part of today’s practice, the team had a short live scrimmage as well as several situational scrimmage stations similar to last week.

Head Coach Bill Callahan said he was very pleased with the way the team worked today and was particularly pleased there were no major injuries.

“We came out of this healthy, which was a major goal for us,” Callahan said.  “It was good to see the guys put in a lot of good work today.  I thought we accomplished quite a bit, in terms of scrimmaging, in terms of the offense being able to function on the run, and making plays.  I thought that was a big part of it--that we made plays on offense, but we have a long way to go.”

Overall, Callahan was pleased with the progress of both the offense and the defense.  “We still have to do a better job on the pass protection and the pressure pickup and on defense I thought we did an excellent job of playing the run, running to the ball, attacking the ball and things of that nature.  I was very pleased with the work.  Our guys continue to work hard and improve and we’re making great strides right now.”

Callahan said quarterback Joe Dailey continues to show improvement.  “For the most part, he’s managing the system better. He’s making better decisions.  Overall he made some great plays in 7-on-7 today.  I really felt his rhythm come alive.”

Callahan said I-back Cory Ross has been a real pleasant surprise this spring.  “It is the little things he does that are impressive. I think he is the most complete guy that I’ve seen in a while at this level.”

Because of the Easter holiday, the Huskers will have the weekend off before resuming practice on Monday.  Next week NU will finish with three full-scale practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, before concluding spring drills on Saturday, April 17 with the annual Red-White Spring Game.
