Lincoln ? Many of the University of Nebraska’s top student-athletes will be honored later this month, as the 2004 Student-Athlete Academic Award Recognition Banquet is set for Sunday, April 18th at 6 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Nearly 250 Husker student-athletes will be honored for their academic achievements at the 14th annual banquet, which also includes the naming of the Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year. The banquet also features the announcement of the Herman Awards, named after the Dick and Dale Herman families, for the highest men’s and women’s team grade-point averages over the previous year.
The 2004 banquet will mark the debut of the Life Skills Award, which will be presented to the team that demonstrated the strongest commitment to all phases of the life skills program, including outreach, education and leadership. Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Will Shields will be on hand to present the Life Skills Award to the team recipient. In January, Shields was selected as the Walter Payton Man of the Year for his off-the-field endeavors, including the Will to Succeed Foundation in Kansas City.
The featured speaker is Dr. Jeannine Falter, who is the Vice President of Business Development at Duncan Aviation and also works as a consultant, providing coaching and leadership development for both individuals and organizations. She holds three degrees from the University of Nebraska, including a Ph.D. with emphasis in organizational psychology, and was honored in 2002 with the Distinguished Alumni Award.
The event will be emceed by ESPN College Football Analyst Trev Alberts. The 1993 Butkus Award winner, Alberts was an NCAA Top Eight Award winner and CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1993.
