James Picks Up Two More Honors

Lincoln ? Senior right-hander Peaches James added two more honors today to what has already been an award-filled season. On Wednesday, James was named the NFCA National Player of the Week and was named one of 25 finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award.

On Tuesday, James was also named the USA Softball National Player of the Week.

James was honored for an outstanding week. She was the winning pitcher in all three of Nebraska’s games last week, posting a 3-0 mark with a 0.00 ERA. James tossed three complete-game shutouts, not allowing more than three hits in any game. In tossing her 10th, 11th and 12th shutouts of the season, James saw her scoreless innings streak rise to 28.1 innings.  After Tuesday’s win over Creighton, her scoreless streak stands at 35.1 innings.

Against conference-leading and 19th-ranked Baylor last weekend, James tossed 14 innings of shutout ball, allowing only three hits. James held the Bears to a .070 batting average and held opposing hitters to a paltry .095 average overall. James once again posted an incredible strikeout-to-walk ratio last week. James struck out 30 hitters, while walking only six, a ratio of 5-to-1.

In addition to being honored for her great week, James was honored for her great season by being named a finalist for player of the year. For the season, James is 21-5 with a microscopic 0.67 ERA. She has struck out 216 batters in 156.1 innings and is holding opposing hitters to a .138 average. James has also tossed a no-hitter, four one-hitters and 13 shutouts.

Against top-five teams, James is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, picking up wins over third-ranked California (3-0) and fourth-ranked Florida State (1-0).

The player of the year list will be reduced to ten players on April 28 and three finalists will be announced May 11. The winner of the 2004 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced May 26 at the opening ceremonies of the NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
