Lincoln -- The Nebraska football team worked out in full pad for two hours and 15 minutes Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The sixth practice of spring ball was highlighted by a goal-line scrimmage. Husker Head Coach Bill Callahan praised the performance of the defense in the scrimmage.
"I thought our defense did very well. They were dominant," Callahan said. "We weren’t as successful offensively today, as we were in the short-yard scrimmage. We still have a ways to go on offense."
Callahan said the NU receivers are continuing to adjust to the West Coast offense.
"Their heads are spinning a little bit," Callahan said of the Husker receiving corps. "They’re having fun. There are a lot of formations and different routes that they have to get accustomed to. There are so many conversions based on coverage, and they’ve got to be able to read on the move and adjust. It makes it pretty complicated, but they push through. We keep grinding, and we’re getting better."
He added that the quarterbacks have grown more comfortable as they continue to study and work hard on the field.
"There’s still some verbiage that they have problems with," Callahan said. "But for the most part, they have a good idea of what we’re asking. Their execution can always improve and get better, in our opinion.
"It’s a work in progress. The guys have worked hard. They’ve studied and they have worked on the field, they’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do. We still have a long ways to go."
Nebraska will take Thursday off but will practice on Friday, April 2, at 4 p.m. On Saturday, April 3, the Huskers will hold their first scrimmage of the spring.
