After a two week break the Nebraska women's golf team will travel to Boerne, Texas to compete in the Baylor-Tapatio Spring Shootout. The tournament will be played at the Bear Ridge Golf Club over a three-day period, Friday-Sunday, March 19-21. One round per day will be played with a daily tee-time set for 7:30 a.m.
The field will consist of 19 teams, six of which are ranked in the top 50 of the GOLFSTAT Head-to-Head rankings, including No. 29 Missouri, No. 30 Texas Christian, No. 31 Kent State, No. 37 Baylor, No. 40 Notre Dame and No. 47 Nebraska. Other competing teams include, Arkansas State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, McLennan Community College, Minnesota, New Mexico State, North Texas, Rollins College, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-El Paso, Texas Pan-American, Texas Tech, Wisconsin and Xavier.
According to Head Coach Robin Krapfl, the Baylor-Tapatio Spring Shootout will be a stepping stone for the Huskers. A number of teams find themselves in similar circumstances as Nebraska entering the tournament.
"It would be a great time for us to pull out of our little slump," Krapfl said.
In addition to the five-person lineup, three Huskers will compete individually. Krapfl has chosen the top three spots in the lineup Senior Stephanie Schaefer (Columbus, Neb.) will golf at the No. 1 position, followed by junior Merynn Ito (Aiea, Hawaii) at the No. 2, with sophomore Jackie Beste (Sauk Centre, Minn.) in third.
Reigning tournament champion Illinois, will return to the field to defend its title. The Fighting Illini came from behind after shooting 297 in the final round to tally 918 (311-310-297) and first place. Despite making the NCAA Regionals the last two years, Illinois will have a hard time contending this season as five of their team members graduated, including second-place individual finisher Renata Young (76-72-74-222). GOLFSTAT ranks Illinois No. 81 in its Head-to-Head standings.
All top five teams will return for a chance at the tournament title, including No. 2 Missouri, No. 3 Baylor, No. 4 Texas Christian and No. 5 Kent State.
Junior D'Rae Ward from Texas Christian will be back to defend her individual tournament title. A definite contender for the top position, Ward compiled three tournament titles and a top-five finish last season.
