Nebraska senior guard Nate Johnson picked up his second award in as many days, as he was named to the United States Basketball Writer's Association All-District Team on Tuesday. The 6-1, 195-pounder from Kansas City, Kan., was also selected to the Honorable-Mention All-Big 12 team on Monday, according to a vote of Associated Press writers.
Johnson led the Huskers in scoring this season with 13.3 points per game while ranking second on the squad in rebounding with 4.5 boards per contest. He added 42 assists (1.6 apg) to rank fifth on the squad and was third on the team with 19 steals (0.7 spg). Johnson led the team with 20 double-figure scoring efforts and tied for the team lead with two double-doubles. He collected a career-high 25 points in a road victory against Big Ten foe Minnesota and tied for the team lead with three 20-point contests in 2003-04, helping Nebraska to a 16-11 record through the regular season.
Johnson is the first Husker to be named to the USBWA All-District Team since Cookie Belcher in 2000. A two-time junior college All-American and the 2002 JUCO Division II Player of the Year at Penn Valley (Kan.) CC, Johnson was second on the team in scoring last season at 13.3 points per game while earning honorable-mention all-league honors from the Associated Press. He was also named the 2003 Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year by the coaches and AP.
Johnson will lead Nebraska into the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday, March 11, when the No. 10-seeded Huskers take on No. 7 seed Oklahoma at 6 p.m.
