Two Huskers Earn Academic All-America Honors

Lincoln ? A pair of Husker football players were honored Monday, as seniors Pat Ricketts and Judd Davies were selected to the second team of the CoSIDA Academic All-America football team. The pair of Huskers were among 48 players named to either the first or second team on the University Division squad.

Davies and Ricketts, both graduates of Omaha’s Millard North High School extend Nebraska’s nation-leading Academic All-America tradition. Nebraska now has 78 all-time academic All-Americans in football, and 210 across all sports and all teams, easily outdistancing all other schools.

The 2003 season marks the first time that either player has been selected for academic All-America honors. Davies carries a 3.90 grade-point average in Nebraska’s pre-medicine program and is a three-time academic all-district pick and four-time academic All-Big 12 honoree. A three-year starter at fullback, Davies has helped Nebraska to a No. 8 ranking in rushing offense, averaging 236.2 yards per game. The senior holds Nebraska’s school record for most touchdowns by a fullback with 14, including the final score in the Huskers’ 31-22 win over Colorado last Friday. This season, he has 85 yards rushing and is second on the team with five touchdowns.

Ricketts, who carries a 3.52 GPA business administration, graduated last August. He has been a vital member of a Husker secondary which has helped NU to top-15 national ranking in four of the five major defensive categories, including first in turnover margin and second in pass efficiency defense. A former walk-on, Ricketts has 32 tackles, five pass breakups and a pair of interceptions this season, including one in the final minutes against Colorado in the regular-season finale. In the classroom, Ricketts is a three-time academic All-District VII and academic All-Big 12 honoree.

The first and second-teams are chosen by the Sports Information Directors of America, and to be nominated, student-athletes must be carry a GPA of 3.20 or higher and be a starter or a significant reserve. In all, Nebraska placed four student-athletes the Academic All-District VII team, including defensive back Philip Bland and linebacker Chad Sievers. Nebraska also had a conference-leading 26 players named to the Academic All-Big 12 team announced last week, including 20 first-team honorees.
