Huskers Use Team Effort to Sweep Missouri

Columbia, Mo. ? Middle blockers Sara Westling and Melissa Elmer combined for 11 blocks and 16 kills on a .454 hitting percentage to lead the No. 10 Nebraska volleyball team to a 30-28, 31-29, 30-26  win over Missouri at the Hearnes Center.

 

The middle blockers weren’t the only Huskers who produced standout performances in the winning effort. Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Saleaumua posted her team-leading 13th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 16 digs. Junior right side hitter Ally Rebholz tallied 10 kills, hit .429 and posted four blocks. Senior right side hitter Anna Schrad posted eight kills and recorded a team-high seven blocks to lead the Huskers to a 12-2 advantage over Missouri.

 

With the win, the Huskers improved to 22-3 overall and 13-2 in the Big 12. NU has won seven straight matches and three straight contests against teams ranked in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25. Nebraska also avenged its Oct. 15, five-game loss to Missouri at the NU Coliseum. Meanwhile, the Tigers fell to 16-8 and 9-6.

 

Missouri took its first lead of game one at 20-19 when Noll pounded a kill off the NU block. Noll was in on a block of Dani Mancuso and added another kill to expand Missouri’s advantage to 24-20. The Huskers cut the lead to two when Elmer and Schrad blocked Shen Danru, and NU trailed, 26-25, after Elmer and Rebholz blocked Lincoln Christian graduate Nicole Wilson. Rebholz then tied the score with a kill, and Elmer followed with a kill as NU regained the lead. The score was tied once more at 28-28 before Rebholz and Schrad pounded back-to-back kills for the 30-28 win.

 

In game two, Nebraska used a 6-0 run that included a kill and two block assists by Westling to take a 19-14 lead. Missouri countered with a 4-0 run that included three kills from Lisa Boyd, cutting the Huskers’ lead to 20-19. Rebholz and Saleaumua provided key kills, and Schrad slugged a kill to make it 28-25, Nebraska. After a Husker hitting error, Missouri tied the game at 28 with back-to-back kills by Noll. The teams exchanged points before Saleaumua notched a kill to give NU a 30-29 lead. Rebholz and Elmer blocked Danru on the next rally to secure the 31-29 second-game victory.

 

The Tigers came out firing in game three, and NU quickly fell behind, 6-0. Missouri led 15-8 after a kill by Noll. The Huskers slowly chipped away at the lead, closing the gap to 29-19 with a 4-0 run that was capped with a solo block of Noll by Schrad. A kill by Elmer evened the score at 21, and the Huskers took their first lead of the game when Elmer blocked MU setter Lindsey Hunter. Nebraska maintained control the rest of the way. Rebholz slammed a kill to make it 29-26, and Westling posted the winning kill in the 30-26, NU victory.

 

The Huskers return home to face Texas Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. at the NU Coliseum. The match will be televised live on CSTV (DirecTV 610) and NETV with Chris Marlowe and Heather Cox calling the action. The match against the Longhorns can also be heard live on B107.3 FM and selected affiliates of the Pinnacle Sports Network.
