Huskers in the NFL: Week 9

Lincoln -- Sunday was a big day for many of the 32 former Huskers playing in the National Football League.

In Minnesota, Ahman Green totaled nearly 200 all-purpose yards, lifting Green Bay to a 30-27 win over the Vikings. The Packers All-Pro running back carried 21 times for 137 yards while catching a team-high five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Green, who is second in the NFC with 871 rushing yards, is averaging over five yards per carry and is close to his fourth straight 1,000-yard season. His performance on Sunday pushed him over 5,000 career rushing yards.

In Houston, linebacker Jay Foreman had seven stops, while Kris Brown added a pair of extra points, as the Texans picked up their third win of the season with a 14-10 upset over the NFC South-leading Carolina Panthers. On the season, Foreman ranks second for the Texans with 71 tackles, including 57 solo stops. The Texans scored with 9:30 remaining and held the Panthers the rest of the day. In a losing effort, defensive end Mike Rucker had four tackles, including two sacks for Carolina. The former Husker rush end leads the NFL with 10 sacks this season, including four multi-sack games in 2003.

In Detroit, the play of center Dominic Raiola and fullback Cory Schlesinger helped the Lions snap a six-game losing streak with a 23-13 win over the Oakland Raiders. Raiola helped the Lions rush for 112 yards while the Lions didn't allow a sack to the Raiders' pass rush. Schlesinger hauled in a team-high four passes for 53 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown. The catch was the longest touchdown reception of Schlesinger’s career and it tied the third-longest catch of his career.

At the Meadowlands, Ralph Brown had five tackles, two pass breakups and an interception, as the N.Y. Giants needed overtime for a 31-28 victory over the New York Jets. Brown, who now has two interceptions on the season, helped the Giants defense force four turnovers in the win. In Atlanta, the Philadephia Eagles got another outstanding performance from Correll Buckhalter in a 23-16 win over the Falcons. Buckhalter, who had 100 yards the previous week, rushed 23 times for 92 yards and caught an 18-yard pass, helping the Eagles to their fifth win in their last six games. At 5-3, Philadephia is one game behind NFC East leader Dallas.

Another former Husker will take the field tonight, as New England Patriots, with offensive lineman Russ Hochstein, travels to Denver to face the Broncos. Currently, Nebraska leads all Big 12 schools with 32 former players on NFL rosters a total that ranks among the leaders for all schools.
