Lincoln, Neb. --- The Nebraska men's basketball team made its first public appearance of the 2003-04 season Wednesday, as the White team defeated the Red, 49-44, in an intrasquad scrimmage at the Bob Devaney Sports Center as part of Husker Haunted Hoops. An estimated crowd of 3,700 was on hand for the activities, which included trick-or-treating and games for children before the 25-minute scrimmage.
Sophomore forward Wes Wilkinson led the way for the White team, as he poured in 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor. The Grand Island native hit 2-of-3 from behind the arc, helping the White squad come from behind in the final seven minutes of the contest. Along with Wilkinson, junior forward John Turek pitched in 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor and added a team-high six rebounds to help the White team outrebound the Red, 20-16.
For the Red team, senior forward Brian Conklin led the way, drilling all four of his three-point attempts. Conklin finished with a game-high 14 points, as he was perfect on the night from the field and the charity stripe, where he added a pair of free throws. The Red team finished the game 8-of-10 at the free throw line, while the White squad was 7-of-12.
Along with Conklin, senior forward Andrew Drevo added 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field for the Red team. Drevo pitched in four steals and two assists. Freshman Charles Richardson Jr. dished out a team-high three assists while the Red's Marcus Neal Jr., a junior college transfer, added a game-high four assists to go with his six points on a pair of three-pointers.
Nebraska opens the 2003-04 season with an exhibition contest at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Monday, Nov. 10, against Alaska-Fairbanks. The game will tip off at 7:05 p.m.
