Ostermann Wins Consolation Bracket at All-American Championships

Pacific Palisades, Calif. -- Gitte Ostermann defeated Denver's Suzana Maksovic, 6-1, 6-2, Friday night to win the consolation bracket at the 2003 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. Ostermann, a junior from Luneberg, Germany, finished the tournament with an 8-1 record and four victories over ranked opponents.

"I think this really shows that Gitte is one of the best players in the country," NU Coach Scott Jacobson said. "To win eight of nine matches at this premier tournament and only drop three sets is amazing. If she can stay healthy, I think she is going to have a remarkable season."

Earlier in the day, Ostermann defeated Emily Marker of Maryland, 6-4, 6-3, in the consolation semifinal. Ostermann defeated 97th-ranked Maja Kovacek of Maryland, 7-5, 6-2, Thursday afternoon. She was 2-1 Wednesday with wins over 48th-ranked Melissa Applebaum of Miami and Harvard's Eva Wang, who is ranked No. 51 nationally. Ostermann went 3-0 in the pre-qualifying singles round last weekend.

The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships features the top players in NCAA Division I tennis. Eight players and four doubles teams from the qualifying round will advance to the tournament's main draw Oct. 9-12 at the Riviera Tennis Club.
